Consciousness and Creativity

When we think of consciousness, most often we associate it with spirituality. But consciousness is, in fact, at work in another prominent aspect of human life—the aspect of creativity. What is creativity? It is the capability to project our ideas and visions outwardly into manifestation. And though we tend to take this capability for granted, it is, in actuality, a very powerful gift that we humans have been given. This does not imply, however, that we always use it for good. On the contrary, our gift of creativity can be a blessing or a curse, depending on our state of consciousness.

Throughout history the great visionaries of our race have conceived and brought forth ideas for change and progress that have been highly beneficial to the human scene. These visionaries have belonged to many different fields of human expertise—scientists, doctors, philosophers, inventors, political leaders, etc. Then, of course, there have also been talented artists, storytellers, and musicians bringing forth works of genius that have served to greatly elevate human culture. But the list of contributors does not stop there. In truth, no matter which field of human endeavor one might find oneself in, creativity can be and has been employed to bring about improvements. When a schoolteacher comes up with a new idea for helping his or her students to learn better, it is creativity that is behind that idea. When an architect envisions a new, never-before-seen design for a building, it is creativity at work. Even when a businessman conceives of new ways to make money, that too is due to creativity. What do all of these creative initiatives have in common? In each case they are expressive of the activity of consciousness.

All consciousness is creative, and all human beings have consciousness. Thus it is our endowment of consciousness that is the real force behind human creativity. True, we may use our talents and other resources to bring an idea into physical manifestation, but the idea itself always comes from consciousness. And since it is the activity of consciousness at work, ideas often come to us seemingly out of the blue. This is because consciousness has its own creative agenda. It always creates after its own kind. That is why our state of consciousness is so important.

When we consider this matter of states of consciousness we must realize that the concept has a twofold meaning. On the one hand, there are at present only three major states of consciousness that we human beings have been made aware of. On the other hand, there are multitudes of minor variations within each of those three major states that also qualify as states of consciousness. For example, in the case of the major state that has dominated human consciousness for the past six thousand years—that which we call Adamic consciousness—there are also smaller variations, both on the side of good and the side of evil. In the case of a visionary such as Thomas Edison, he was clearly moving in a variation of Adamic consciousness that allowed him to conceive a breakthrough idea in the field of electricity—an idea that has brought great good into our world. Whereas, the same equation holds true for those who have received creative ideas that resulted in great evil, such as a Hitler. That too was an outworking of a variation of Adamic consciousness.

Each of the three major states of consciousness has its own creative outworking, regardless of the human impulse to try to control it. What are these states? They are Adamic consciousness, Christ consciousness, and divine or God consciousness. How do these differ in their creative manifestations? Adamic consciousness has built the world of man, as we now know it; so its creative manifestation is the most commonly found one among us. And not only is it ubiquitous in its creative outworking; it tends to be troubling and problematic as well. Christ consciousness has also been at work in the human scene, but unfortunately it has been relatively rare, with its outworking being one of human perfection and ultimate goodness. And God consciousness, being infinite in its creative power, created the heavens and the earth (that is, the universe), including the infinite manifestation of outer space—a creative display that is interwoven with a mind-boggling array of laws governing its life.

The foremost example or demonstration of Adamic consciousness’ creative outworking is the world of man, as it has been for the past six thousand years (and still is at present). The foremost demonstration of the Christ state can be found in the lives of the spiritual masters (as well as many of their disciples) that have graced the human stage from time to time. Though there have been quite a number of these (especially in the East), for the most part their influence has been limited on account of regional boundaries and the lack of global communication systems. And the foremost demonstration of the divine or God state of consciousness is all the non-human aspects of our created universe. Though there is no record of a human being ever moving in this state, these works can be ascribed to the creative outworking of the great being that we most often call God. Moreover, it can be deduced by the demonstration of these works that such a God-being (or beings) does exist, and its (their) state of consciousness has created all these wonderful universal works. And since all consciousness is made of the same stuff, there is no reason that a fully evolved human being could not one day move in this amazing state. As for now, however, this state of consciousness is so far beyond anything the human scene has ever conceived of that the concept of God as a singular personal-anthropomorphic creative force is as far as we have gotten. Interestingly, the Christ state has testified that it knows the truth about the God state, but the Adamic state has not been able to receive that testimony because of its limited scope. In other words, those moving in the Christ state know God aright, while those moving in the Adamic state can only guess. And that is why Adamic religion has shown itself to be faulty and powerless.

For us here in the West we have the well-documented demonstration of Jesus as a singular testimony of Christ consciousness. Why singular? Because in our Adamic ignorance and superstition we were so awed by Jesus’ testimony that we lumped him in with our erroneous concept of a singular personal God. In other words, even to this day we have not rightly understood who Jesus was. We have not understood that he was indeed a man very much like us who had fully attained the state of Christ consciousness. To our credit we at least called him the Christ. But our limited scope has not enabled us to grasp the idea that the Christ is actually a state of consciousness—one that every human being is capable of attaining to. Our superstition aside, however, Jesus did successfully testify to the creative demonstration of Christ consciousness. And that demonstration was certainly wonderful to behold.

In our ignorance we have not only misunderstood God consciousness; we have also misunderstood Christ consciousness. In fact, we have even failed to rightly understand our own state of Adamic consciousness. If we had been able to do this we would not be so mystified by our own creative capabilities. We would understand why our world is like it is and why it has not responded very well to all our efforts to change and improve it. We would recognize that it is our state of consciousness that has created our world, and therefore conclude that the only way to really change things for the better is to raise our state of consciousness to that of the Christ. Thus we would eliminate a good deal of the confusion about our existential condition. This ability to learn about ourselves rightly, according to our state of consciousness and its creative capabilities, was, in fact, one of Jesus’ most pressing ministerial agendas. Why? Because he knew that much of our suffering has its source in our ignorance about our own created makeup. Not only have we misunderstood the tenets of consciousness; up until fairly recently we have not even believed that we possess such an endowment.

This was also what all of the great eastern masters emphasized in their teachings. They called it self-realization or enlightenment. And how can we human beings best become enlightened in these matters? One sure way is through rightly understanding the creative power of our endowment of consciousness. That is the key to self-knowledge.

Jesus and all the masters were no longer moving in Adamic consciousness; they were moving in Christ consciousness. They were avatars who no longer had karma of their own to work out. So they were born into our world for a different purpose than all of us Adamites—to serve and attempt to enlighten us! And how did they do this? In two ways. One way was that they gathered as many receptive disciples around them as they could find and taught them the truth about man’s spiritual makeup. They taught about consciousness and human consciousness evolution. They taught about consciousness’ creative capability and outworking and tried to help people understand why our world is as it is and why human life has been characterized by so much suffering. And the second way that they served us did not involve as much effort on their part. It was to simply be themselves. Why? Because by being themselves they were demonstrating Christ consciousness for all to see.

Why did it help us to see Christ consciousness demonstrated? Because that is where we are going. That is what we are becoming, if only we would release ourselves to evolve. And so to see Christ consciousness demonstrated in a human life has been an encouragement of unparalleled proportions. It is an inspiration like no other.

To know Christ consciousness and to know that we ourselves have the capability to go there is to be delivered from the inertia of ignorance that has kept us stuck in Adam for six thousand years. It is to get back on track with our evolutionary instincts. To see Christ is to see the goodness that we have awaiting us in the New Age. It is to overcome the world, as Jesus testified that he had done.

Our dilemma is this: our Adamic consciousness has built our world, and our world then turned around and imprisoned us—not with walls of concrete and barbed wire, but with walls of ignorance. And then to make matters worse, our world has taught us from birth that we are free—that we are not imprisoned but are already enlightened. No wonder we are so confused! The world has lied to us and kept us in darkness.

Jesus and the other avatars of Christ consciousness were once men and women just like you and me. They were once moving in Adamic consciousness. They were once a part of our world. But what happened? They broke free. They learned the truth about the created human makeup. They learned the key-truth that we human beings are evolving states of consciousness. They themselves saw the Christ, just up ahead of the natural human evolutionary process. They saw that consciousness evolution into the Christ would solve pretty much every human difficulty and dilemma. It was the answer we have all been yearning for. And so they did the spiritual sadhana. They did the spiritual work that released their evolutionary impulses. And what happened? They evolved in consciousness into the Christ. And in so doing, they overcame the world.

It is Christ consciousness and Christ consciousness alone that will usher in the New Age. No amount of Adamic tweaking or effort will bring this great event to pass. We have already tried all that, and it has not worked. Making improvements to the Adamic world, no matter how well intended, falls short of the glory we were created for; it is not enough. There is only one solution to the present human dilemma. We need to start again from scratch, not as the Adam man but as the Christ man. Why is this? It is because our world was created by Adamic consciousness, and as long as we continue in that state our world will stay basically the same. But should we as a collective happen to give way to our evolutionary impulses and become the Christ, the old world will utterly pass away and a new world will be born. We will not even need to build it. It will happen all on its own. Why? Because consciousness is a creative power.
