Individual Consciousness

The study of human consciousness might be described as consisting of three distinct fields. There are states of consciousness, the collective expression of consciousness, and individual consciousness. Understanding all three of these aspects of consciousness and how they overlap with one another is an important part of understanding what consciousness is and the degree to which it impacts human life.

As for states of consciousness, this concept is perhaps bantered about a little too lightly at times. Many people view this concept as a kind of individual right of expression. In other words, an individual’s state of consciousness is often confused with their personality and unique makeup. Their state of consciousness is linked to their predictable mental function ability—to their thought patterns, emotional responses, likes and dislikes, etc. And so, many have come to believe that there are as many states of consciousness as there are people. But this is not what I mean when I speak of a state of consciousness. Rather the way I see it, a state of consciousness is foremost a collective reality that is so binding and overpowering that individuals have little say about their participation in and expression of it. For example, in our modern world we are all born into the same well-defined state of consciousness called Adamic. This is achieved through having a DNA makeup that is highly compatible with the prevailing state, as well as through an extensive program of socialization or cultural conditioning. So, it is not simply that we move in and express a certain state of consciousness; we are, in fact, compelled and controlled by that state. We also tend to be limited in the arena of human potential, especially if the state we are controlled by comes with a limiting outlook.

We can see then that according to this definition a state of consciousness can become virtually universal in its outworking. It can become so influential that people mistake it for reality itself. In this way a state of consciousness can greatly impact and overlap with the collective consciousness. This is precisely what has happened during this present age. The state of consciousness that we call Adamic (based on the biblical portrayal of a man named Adam who was the first to awaken to this state) not only became our collective consciousness; it also became our broad consensual reality view. And once that happened, we became hopelessly stuck in this state, thwarting consciousness’ natural evolutionary impetus and rendering it inconsequential.

This has been the story of this present age of human endeavor. As descendants of Adam, our state of consciousness has commandeered our reality view and turned us in to a race of clones. All the attributes of Adam’s state of consciousness have been passed down to us so convincingly that very few have dared to question the way of life they have been born into. That has been our collective destiny, but fortunately that has not been the end of the story. Rather the ultimate storyline pertaining to our destiny has been bequeathed to the indomitable evolutionary thrust of individual human consciousness. While the collective has been effectually stolen away by and cemented in the Adamic state of consciousness, the experience of the human individual has remained an open book—a free, incorruptible life force. Of course, this does not mean that all individuals have intentionally sought to defy the mold. In fact, it has only been a relatively small number of courageous souls that have lived this way. But the reality is that even if only one individual refuses to be cloned with the collective and truly seeks to express the individual workings of their endowment of consciousness, that one individual would theoretically have the power to bring down the entire Adamic edifice. So let us look a little more closely at this phenomenon.

Each and every individual human being born into this world has within their psyche an endowment of spiritual consciousness—an endowment that was created to be evolutionary in its outworking. Being spiritual, this endowment is not subject to biological death, like our bodies and minds are. This means that although our physical bodies die, our spiritual essence of consciousness lives on, thereby potentially giving its evolutionary impetus more than one lifetime to express itself.

Unlike the collective expression of consciousness, the individual expression is hidden deep within the individual psyche, making any evolutionary progress difficult to assess, even for the individual him/herself. This unseen quality is in contrast to the collective expression, which tends to be not only plainly known but flaunted. Though the evolutionary status of our individual endowment of consciousness is difficult to assess, each individual has the power to influence that status in any given lifetime. Again, this is in sharp contrast to the collective expression, which throughout this age has been commandeered by controlling human elements and rendered hopelessly beyond the individual’s power of influence. This commandeering of the collective consciousness has effectually stymied all evolutionary expression. It also has attempted to impact the status of individual evolutionary expression. But fortunately, in this it has failed. This is because up until now all of the outside controlling forces known to men have not been able to gain access to the hidden realm of the individual psyche.

The problem is that though the collective has been unable to infiltrate the inner realm of the individual, they have made it extremely difficult for any individual seeking to break free and impact the evolutionary status of their endowment. The collective has used proven socio-psychological brain-washing techniques (such as infantile cultural conditioning) to render the vast majority of individuals helplessly lost and confused when it comes to their inner world—a weakness that acts as an imposing barrier of inertia inside most people. And so, even though we, as individuals, have always had the power to choose the way of consciousness evolution, the imposing barrier of inertia inside of us discourages most of us from even trying. Moreover, the thought of ever trying to impact the collective reality view is even more daunting. For, not only is that virtually impossible; it can also land us in social isolation.

Therefore, if we are serious about getting back on track with our created mandate of consciousness evolution, we really have no choice but to focus on individual amendment. True, many have defied this obvious lack of choice by spending all their energy, time, and money trying to change the world, but unfortunately these only end up with the sensation of having banged their head against a granite wall. The good news is that when we focus on our inner world we not only find progress to be possible; we also gain the revelation that releasing our own individual stagnation is actually the only power we have to affect the collective. In other words, we can change the world, but only by changing our individual state first.

The implications of this discovery are nothing short of miraculous. What it means is that the power to change the world has been ours all along. But we have been approaching the matter from the wrong angle. And this misdirected approach has rendered us powerless. It also means that individual consciousness is the greatest power known to man. This is why Jesus shunned the idea of trying to change outward institutions and established orders and instead made it his number one priority to seek to empower each and every individual that crossed his path to be able to gain dominion over their own inner world.

It is focusing on our own individual endowment of consciousness that brings the results we long to see. First, it heals and strengthens us, but then (and this is the mysterious part) it releases consciousness’ evolutionary power outward in such a way that it impacts our circumstances and changes our life situation. This progression of true positive change is beyond the reach of the collective to control or combat. This was what Jesus did in his day. From his own inner state of clear seeing and strength he released a power upon the status quo proponents that they not only could not counter; they did not even know what it was. This power had its source within Jesus. It was the power of his own individual endowment of consciousness having been freed to evolve unhindered into the new state of consciousness that is the next state awaiting us all—the state of the Christ. And though Jesus left the human stage at the early age of thirty-three, the power that he had unleashed threw the status quo collective power hierarchy in the Mediterranean region into such confusion that it took them nearly two hundred years to recover. And if the truth were known, they never have recovered in earnest, only in the deluded implementation of wielding even more control and oppression.

Based on this historical analysis therefore, we can learn from Jesus’ methodologies the one truly efficacious method for freeing mankind from the age-long oppression of the Adamic state of consciousness. Of course, it has not been the state of consciousness itself that has been the oppressor; it has been the takeover of the human collective by men that saw Adamic consciousness as their ticket to power and riches. The Adamic state gave us the illusion of separateness and total unaccountability. It turned our society into a Darwinian, dog-eat-dog, survival-of-the-fittest, human strength nightmare, and those that commandeered the collective became utterly sold to that illusion. Then in their wickedness they force-fed the rest of humanity a reality view that utterly negates the truth about the evolutionary nature of human consciousness. And that is why we are still in the mess we are in.

Jesus shattered the illusion of Adamic consciousness. How? First, by going about healing all those individuals that had been oppressed and beaten down by this false societal order. Second, by teaching us the truth about our own created inner makeup—about our endowment of spiritual consciousness and that endowment’s evolutionary nature. He never encouraged a political form of revolution but instead taught that each individual has the power to do what he did—that is, to change the world simply by setting themselves free inwardly. In essence, this was Jesus’ true message of salvation, not some pie-in-the-sky doctrine about an after-life in heaven. And so, we see that Jesus was our example and Way Shower, not our savior. Our savior, as it turns out, is our own created evolutionary endowment of individual consciousness.

That is perhaps the most amazing part about all this: each one of us has the power to do what Jesus did. Even the weakest, most down-trodden, broken human being can do this. For, the power is not a human power; it is the power of consciousness evolution, which is actually the power of created universal law. But we have been taught so many lies that we are unable to recognize the truth about our own makeup. This is how we have been held down for six thousand years. It is like playing the game: Pin the Tail on the Donkey. In the beginning of the age strong men blindfolded us and pointed us in the opposite direction from where our power lies.

Forget about changing the collective (changing the world). Turn inward and seek to know your own individual endowment of consciousness. Do not let the illusion of inertia discourage you. When you find your endowment of consciousness look past its present Adamic state and have faith in its potential to evolve into the Christ. Don’t be ashamed of your past failures and desperate ploys. Receive Jesus’ sacrifice of atonement to cleanse your consciousness and release it to start fresh. Give it the freedom to do what it was created to do—that is, to evolve. That is your power, your one and only true power!
